"My main man!" (response, "My main giiiiirl!) Herman was one of the stars of North Hall/Beardsley. Who didn't love Herman? I was so fortunate to meet up with him on one of my visits to Evanston after moving to Denmark. He gifted me with an autographed copy of "his" LP "From P.A.G.E. With Love" which has been enjoyed beyond believing. I only wish I had gotten him over here to visit as we had hoped.

I was supposed to attend the 30th reunion, but didn't show up.  It was the night my beloved father died.  I didn't give the reunion a 2nd thought.

A few weeks later, I received a sweet letter from Herman.  He was worried about me that I hadn't shown up.  What a sweet, kind man.  We met as freshmen at ETHS and were always friends.  A gentle giant indeed.  Rest in peace, my Friend.

After Herman lost his other leg to diabetes and he came home from a 6-month stay in the hospital, I used to keep him company on the telephone. We talked about everything. He was very open minded. He had thought that Israel was a theocracy. He was delighted to know that Israel is not a theocracy and that it is actually a democracy and the only democracy in the Middle East. As the months went on, I started to research where I could buy a sugar free pastry. I was about to visit him and bring it to him when my father got sick, and I got distracted for the next 2 years. Within those 2 years, Herman died, and to this day, like the day that John Kennedy was assassinated, I can tell you exactly where I was when I found out that beloved Herman had passed. I am forever grateful to have known him.

"I'm speaking loudly so you can hear me and wearing white so you can see me."  Best line of any political speech in history. He referenced the line in his commencement speech too.

I had a different experience with Herman. Herman and his family belonged to the church my father passed there in Evanston. He did for a while have a crush on me but I was interested in someone else. But one time my father was in Evanston hospital and they had the spirit of soul visit the patients in the hospital. Well they sang to my father and he remembered it so well and and that's when he first saw Mr Gillespie thought he was the greatest. But Herman did a little extra for him. After we left Evanston I heard periodically from people. But I had sort of lost contact until I don't remember what I was looking at and I saw his name. I was in the library on a computer and tears started to form in my eyes and I was asked okay. And then I told them that there was a dear friend of mine who I didn't know who had passed. And he had a nickname for me it was Cudley Dudley. Herman was one of s kind and they will never be anyone as sweet and as talented as he was.

I am pretty sure that Herman died in 2007.
