I met Marsha at Skiles Jr High (now called King Arts Lab School) in the 7th grade, when Marsha hung out with Beth Cassidy. I was close friends with Reene Perper, and I remember Marsha was very motherly and played matchmaker so Reene could get to know Mike Uretz (who I later worked with as an editor at Scott, Foresman & Co). Marsha also wanted to introduce me to Mike Wheeler, who was a very decent person. I had a typical 7th grade crush on him (he never knew it!) and I told my friends about it. My girlfriends and I went to a carnival at Howard and Western and were waiting in line for a ride. A stranger was a bully and called me a "China Doll." Mike pulled the boy by his shirt collar, held him up, and told him, "What's wrong with a China Doll?" My friends were so impressed by Mike's actions, they were practically swooning over him. I never forgot that incredible act of kindness. It wasn't until a decade later when I threw a huge party in Evanston (I was single then) and Mike showed up! He ended up leaving his flask at my place and when I returned it, I finally got to kiss my old heart throb! I  But I digress. It wasn't until senior year at ETHS that I became close to Marsha. She and Wendy Norris brought me a "jello" cake for my birthday because they knew I loved jello! We kept in touch that summer before college and visited our favorite English teacher, Dr. Stern. I hadn't seen her since then (50 years ago), but I called her before the 40th ETHS reunion to catch up. I teased her and said her name sounded Irish! I will miss her. She was a true friend.
